Our History & Mission

What is the Santa Cruz High School Athletics Hall of Fame?

Retired Santa Cruz High School teacher and longtime coach Bill Dodge and his late wife, Roberta, spent years researching and documenting SCHS athletes and their accomplishments from the 1920s to 2012. Bill sought an avenue to share his findings, collaborating with Santa Cruz writer and historian Geoffrey Dunn to create a website Santa Cruz Sports History using information gleaned from high school yearbooks and articles from the student newspaper Trident.

In 2013, Geoff contacted John Lindsay, a retired local journalist, to assist with the project. That same year, Bill and John talked at a SCHS class reunion about establishing a SCHS athletics hall of fame using his research as the foundation. Several months later, Santa Cruz High Alumni Association hosted the new selection committee at the alumni office, where meetings have since been held.

Over 100 Years of Excellence

The original 2013 committee included Santa Cruz High School Alumni Association President John Harwood and Treasurer Kim Joslin. Other committee members were Mel Bowen, Dave Brockmann, Tom Curtiss, Bill Dodge, John Lindsay, Bill Lovejoy and Casey Tefertiller.

Today, a Board of Directors guides the non-profit organization, granted 501(c)3 tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service in August 2017 (Fed. I.D. #82-1816791). The board has established nomination, selection and voting criteria, for athletes, coaches, athletic directors and community members, and is charged with planning the inductee awards luncheon. To be eligible for nomination, all candidates must have graduated or departed 10 years prior from Santa Cruz High School.

Santa Cruz High School athletes have brought excellence and pride to our community for more than 120 years. The Santa Cruz High School Athletics Hall of Fame, Inc. will join in fueling our passion for sports, rekindle fond memories and honor past athletics history.
